Fencing Math

The Challenge
Don't you hate it when you find out your math has real life application? I do. Which happened to happen today. I opened my math book and saw at the bottom of the page an optional challenge to find out how tall a pyramid was by the height of it's shadow.
Since  it was optional, I opted not to do it, but instead challenged Farmer to. He got it right, than mentioned we could measure how tall the barn was by measuring it's shadow.
Our barn
Our barn was built in 1919 by my great-grandpa, and I think that's pretty neat, so I said I'd do it.
I measured my self (5'3"), and then my shadow (4'). I than measured the barn's shadow. 25' 4". (Can you figure it out?) I did the problem and came up with the grand total of...(drumroll please) 33! Slightly rounded though....
I'd better go though. We need to fix fence so we can move our heifers. We are going to be doing a lot of moving around soon so Comet can have some privacy when she foals. =D

Spring is on it's way! Everything is green! A blessing after last summer.
We have trained Cory to halter and will hopefully take him out to graze today or tomorrow.
We anticipate greatly the foaling of Comet, but we don't know a whole lot about raising a foal. If you do, we'd be obliged if you'd tell us. =D

Of calves, buckies, and bulls...

A felicitous day to all who happen to examine  this writing! In response to John Branyan, celebrated comic,  we shall now endeavor to complete yon post, entirely in Olde English.
First, I would care to mention to all the births into cow-dom, since we last posted. Jemmima beget a pied-faced heifer to whom we have now assigned the title High Rhulain, and to Lego was born a calf, in colour liken to that of a raven entirely, in name, Annie. Reed was birthed by Eve, and there exists also a calf of unknown color, although it is known to be of the female species, and the offspring of Maggie.
Secondly, when I awakened from my slumber and gazed out mine glass enclosed portal, what to my wondering eyes should appear? But a fully grown, male, bovine! But he fed not on the grass in his enclosure, but stood pompously in the trench which traverses alongside yon road! Hurriedly, I summoned my father, telling him of the awful deed, which had been executed by this fiendish bullock. He swiftly gathered to himself a vast pile of alfalfa, with which he lured the wayward livestock into his proper enclosure.
Lastly, we have commenced training on Corriam. We must first teach him to follow compliantly on halter made of rope, then we shall take him, with aforesaid item, in he manner for which way it was intended to be worn, to meadows verdant with edible foliage of diverse nature.

Miss Lane E. S.

Well I need to catch up with pictures, so here goes my (I'm guessing) longest post yet.
First off, since the last post Jasmine had a girl, which is named Salizberre. (There is an incredibly long (And odd/hilarious) story behind this, if you want to hear it, tell us so) There is pictures of some of the newer baby calves at the bottom of the post.
Now, for some more about our new bucket-calf. He was born the 5th of March, and we bought him the 19th from our neighbor, who had sold the mother because it had cancer eye. We have just about got him drinking easily from a bottle, but he is still not quite perfect. Pictures of him at the bottom too.
We got quite a bit more rain as well, so we played in some puddles, and took some photographs, again at the bottom.

Well I guess this isn't as long as I thought it was, but here's the pictures now!

A Bucket Calf

We got a bucket calf a couple days ago! It's a brockle-faced boy, and his name is Corriam. He is almost completely bottle-trained already. Hopefully we'll get some pictures up tomorrow.

Rain! Rain!

Emily and Spring
Frolicking Calves
Praise the Lord! It rained! Or should I say, it is raining? It started last night and hasn't really stopped since!
Because of the rain, Farm Boy and I thought the calves might go into the shed. It's fun to sit there until they come in and lay down, then sneak up behind them and pet them. Anyways, We gathered some alfalfa and went out there (and got very wet on the way) and started to attract the cows with it. When our alfalfa ran out, we got settled into the shed. Farm Boy sat up against the back wall, and I laid down in the middle of the shed. The calves started coming in, and one started sniffing me. It sniffed my cap, than my back, jeans, and started licking my shoes! It licked for a while, then went and laid down. It was very exciting because I rarely do well trying to pet calves.

Also, Emily and Carrie calved. Emily calved last night and Carrie calved at around 8:00 P.M. today. Emily's was a girl and it was named Spring. We are not sure what Carries was, but we'll make sure to post when we do!

More Baby Calves, and a Bucket-Calf!

First off, I need to catch you up on the calves that have been born, so here is a sample calving-season record-book page:
If you have any questions about this, post them and one of us will answer.

Now a couple stories from the weekend; On Sunday a neighbor called, asking for some help with an aggressive cow that had prolapsed. The cow, which we dubbed 'Persephone' tried to attack our neighbor, but he was able to stay safe, as there were trees between them. She would not cooperate and follow her calf into the corrals, who was being carried in a special cradle attached to our neighbor's pick-up. She instead ran off through the trees, causing herself more damage. She then laid down and refused to stand. The Farmer tried to prod her into standing, but that did not work, although she did once whip around and try to take him down. Our neighbor then decided to put a rope halter around her head, and tie that to his pick-up, so that she could not attack them while the veterinarian tried to help her. She once tried to knock our neighbor down during this process, but he was on his guard and got away easily. The vet then did all he could, but since the cow had been so wild, she had caused much damage to herself and the vet could not save her.
Her calf, whose ear tag ID number was 316, we decided to call Big John (3:16). Later that day, Farmer and I, (Farm Boy) got to feed that neighbor's three bucket calves, one of which was Big John (3:16). Big John (3:16) got tube-fed, but the other two got bottles of milk re-placer. After they were fed, I had some fun running around in their pen while they chased me, and I should have a video of that sometime, but the videos are not working right now. I will try again tomorrow, and will also get you some more baby calf pictures tomorrow. Thanks for taking the time to read this 'book'!

New Calf; Jumping Practice

Rosemary and her calf; Harlequin on the left (She's still tiny!)
Last night Rosemary had a nice all-black boy. It doesn't have a name yet, but we have some pictures.
After we fed cattle, Farm Girl and I decided to practice jumping on and off the truck-bed while it was stopped. It is about 4 foot off the ground, I believe. We took videos to show you above, sped up.

Pictures are so much fun, so here's some more baby calves:
